Hello!

I am Dr. Andy Rose – a music performance major (classical clarinet) at CUNY Queens College, a 1967 graduate. I earned an MA in Elementary Teaching at New York University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University.

For 42 years, I was a public educator – the first 13 as a grade 5 teacher and Reading Specialist in New York City. In 1980, I became a principal in the Norwood Public School District, Bergen County, New Jersey. In 1984, I was promoted to the role of Chief School Administrator in which position I remained until my retirement in July 2009.  In May 2009, the Bergen Executive County Superintendent of Schools awarded me the title of “Distinguished Educator”.

    • So much info in so few words. Tolstoy could learn a lot. Yet, he once wrote: “The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity.” Honoring teachers as heroes with this blog fits his conviction.

  10. Congratulations on your accomplishments and continuing to honor those in the educational field even in your retirement. I also am a retired educator after almost 30 years. My dad made it to 40 :>) I was not ready to cut the umbilical cord so I, too, continue but as an educational consultant. There are two postings on one of my blogs that might interest you. One was posted in April and the other in May but their messages remain just as important today as they did then.

  11. I really enjoyed learning about you and your very rich career in education. With your expertise, you will make a mark on the lives of children as you begin your new journey.
Be sure to incorporate your music into your presentations. You will be sure to gain the attention of children ( as you well know).
Let the fun begin! You will love your new adventures.
    I will visit again!

  12. Dear Dr. Andy:
WOW! You are BLESSED and I’m IMPRESSED!
This is FANTASTIC. Keep up the good work – we need people like you in this world.

  13. Andy,
Well said in relation to “Why Teachers are Heroes”! With 40 years of public high school experience and now engaged in private higher education, I have witnessed many of those “heroes” as they day by day inspired children to reach for their dreams. We need to put teachers back on the top of pedestals in our communities and your words are a catalyst for achieving that goal. Thank you for your inspiration and leadership.

  14. As a retired principal, teacher and college adjunct professor for over thirty-five years, I found “Why are Teachers Heroes” to be most rewarding, exemplary and inspiring not only for educators, but also for all readers including parents and students. The valuable and impressive reasons written by Dr. Andy as to “Why Teachers are Heroes” will also greatly benefit those who aspire to be teachers and wish to be outstanding in their careers in education. Congratulations and all the best, Dr. Andy with your excellent work, for you are not only a great hero for me but also for all others in education!

  15. HOPE THE BOOK IS A SUCCESS THAT ENCOURAGES YOU TO CONTINUE
FICTION WRITING AS IT OBVIOUSLY GIVES YOU A GREAT DEAL OF
    PLEASURE.

  16. Hi Dr Andy,
It is wonderful that you are continuing your passion for education after retirement.

I appreciate the name you selected for this blog.

  17. It’s really good to hear your live news in Korea. Just with a month living in your home, I was affected by you as an educator. Though I am an English teacher in Korea now, I hope I will become a real educator someday like you. Give my best to lovely Vivian. You and she are also my heroes.

    • Dr. Andy, It was a pleasure performing my American Heroes concert at Norwood when you were there at the helm. Thank you for your work in giving importance to real heroes. I wish you all the best with your writing and publishing! Jonathan Sprout, Author
